Away Day, Offsite or Retreat? A Planner's Guide for Glasgow Teams

The three terms get used interchangeably in most planning briefs, and that is where problems start. A team lead asks for "an offsite" and means a half day workshop. A People team books "a retreat" that is really a one day away day with a nicer lunch. Glasgow's position, close to genuinely dramatic Scottish countryside while still being a major city in its own right, makes the choice between the three especially worth getting right. Here is a clear line between them, and how to pick for a Glasgow team in 2026. 

An away day is the shortest and most focused of the three: a single day, usually held somewhere other than the office, built around a specific goal such as strategy planning or a project kick off. It is structured, agenda led, and everyone is back home by the evening. 

An offsite covers similar ground but runs a little looser and can stretch across a day and a half or two days, often for a specific team working through a bigger piece of planning. A retreat is the most expansive: multiple days, usually with an overnight stay, built as much around rest and connection as around any single agenda item. 

Start with the outcome, not the format. If the goal is a specific decision, such as agreeing next quarter's priorities, an away day or short offsite is almost always enough. If the goal is broader, such as rebuilding trust after a difficult period or giving people space to properly switch off, a retreat earns its extra time and budget. 

Team size and dispersion matter too. A Glasgow-based team can often get everything it needs from a well run away day close to home. A team with people travelling in from across Scotland or further afield usually justifies the trip with a longer offsite or retreat, since the value of one day in the same room rarely covers the logistics of getting everyone there. 

An away day is, by definition, a single day, typically nine or ten in the morning through four or five in the afternoon. An offsite generally runs one and a half to two days, enough time to work through a substantial agenda without necessarily needing an overnight stay, though many teams add one night for a proper evening together. 

A retreat is where the extra time genuinely pays for itself, usually two to four days including at least one overnight stay. Anything shorter starts to feel like an offsite with a hotel bill attached; anything longer and most teams find fatigue starts to outweigh the benefit. 

It changes substantially. An away day venue needs a strong meeting space, reliable AV and easy transport links within the city. An offsite venue needs the same, plus breakout spaces and, if it runs overnight, comfortable accommodation. 

A retreat venue is where the brief changes most, and this is where Glasgow's location genuinely earns its keep. Within a short drive lies Loch Lomond and genuinely dramatic countryside, giving access to a real change of scenery without the travel time a retreat from many other UK cities would need. Look for a Member Profile that highlights outdoor space, a strong food offering and genuinely restful accommodation, since the environment is doing as much work as the agenda. 

Is a retreat just a longer offsite? 

Not quite. Length is one difference, but the bigger one is intent. An offsite is still fundamentally task focused. A retreat is built around the team as much as the task, with rest, culture and connection given equal billing to the agenda. You can run a two day offsite and a two day retreat in the same amount of time and end up with two very different experiences. 

Can an away day include an overnight stay? 

By the strict definition, no. If your team wants to add a dinner and an overnight stay to extend the day, that is a perfectly good idea, it just means you are really planning a short offsite rather than an away day, and the venue brief and budget should reflect that.
